The Fiat Panda 4×4, when it was introduced, gained popularity as the preferred choice for rugged and adventurous individuals, particularly bearded mountain farmers. It was renowned for its versatility and capability to traverse various terrains, such as alpine pastures.

Fiat relaunched the Panda 4×4 twice, with the second and third generations always offering all-wheel drive options. These iterations featured a raised and angular design, maximizing interior space efficiency. The most recent version was available with a unique two-cylinder turbo engine, priced at 17,990 euros. Notably, it was the most affordable all-wheel drive car in the German market, surpassing competitors like the Suzuki Ignis, Swift, and Dacia Duster in terms of price.

Weighing in at 1,165 kilograms with a driver and fuel, the Panda 4×4 was the smallest all-wheel-drive car available. Its lightweight contributed to its impressive performance, enabling it to achieve notable distances. Comparatively, some compact cars today have a total weight without a driver that exceeds the Panda 4×4’s weight, reaching up to 1,530 kilograms. The vehicle boasted a tight turning circle of 9.7 meters, owing to its wheelbase of 2.30 meters.

Due to its desirability and capabilities, the Panda 4×4 held its value well in the used car market. Even after several years of usage and substantial mileage, it retained a significant portion of its original price. It was often available with diesel engines and occasionally with mileage exceeding 250,000 kilometers. While other vehicles may be better suited for global expeditions, the Panda 4×4 proved itself capable of venturing both on and off-road.

A brief overview of the Panda’s history reveals that Fiat introduced the first-generation model in 1980. The car’s ingeniously simple concept, featuring straight sheet metal and large windows to save costs and maximize space, was not immediately appreciated by everyone. The flexible seating arrangement allowed for various purposes, from sleeping in the car to transporting large items such as refrigerators. Instead of a conventional glove compartment, the front passenger had an open shelf with a sliding ashtray. In 1983, Fiat introduced a switchable all-wheel drive system from Steyr, expanding the versatility of the vehicle.

The second and third generations of the Panda continued to offer all-wheel drive, incorporating a viscous coupling. From 2003 to 2011, Fiat manufactured the angular and van-like second generation (code-named 169) in Tychy, Poland.

The third generation (code-named 319) was produced in Pomigliano d’Arco, southern Italy, starting in 2011. It featured a rounder, safer, and more comfortable design. In 2012, Fiat reintroduced the 4×4 variant, which received recognition as the SUV of the year by Topgear. While the Panda 4×4 Cross had a distinct lifestyle-oriented appearance, it remained true to its practical nature.

The small yet powerful 1.3-liter diesel engine, producing 95 horsepower, was particularly well-suited for the car. Additionally, a unique two-cylinder turbo engine generating 85 horsepower became the sole available option for the all-wheel drive Panda.

Fiat offered a glimpse into the future of the Panda with the Centoventi study unveiled in 2019. This small electric car showcased innovative use of space and customizable features. All-wheel drive was demonstrated through the inclusion of a second electric motor on the rear axle. However, the forthcoming electric successor will likely have a higher weight due to the inclusion of batteries.

The Fiat Panda 4×4 held a special place as not just the smallest and most affordable all-wheel drive car in the German market, but also as a distinctive vehicle with its own character. It successfully traveled great distances and blazed its own trail when required.
