Toyota Yaris Emerged as Top-Selling Toyota Car

The Toyota Yaris has emerged as the top-selling Toyota vehicle in the European market, with the production of its 10 millionth unit at the Valenciennes assembly plant in France. This accomplishment places the compact Japanese car in an elite group of highly successful models.

Only a few model names in the automotive industry have been affixed to millions of vehicles throughout history. Examples include iconic models such as the VW Golf, Ford Focus, and BMW 3 Series, which have gained international acclaim and popularity. The Toyota Yaris now officially joins this exclusive club as the 10 millionth unit rolled off the production line at the Valenciennes plant on March 30, 2023, at 12:15 p.m.

What sets the Yaris apart from many other models in this esteemed category is that it achieved this production milestone in its fourth generation, within a span of less than 25 years. This count does not even include the various variants sold in different markets under names such as Echo, Belta, Vios, Scion iA, or Daihatsu Charade. The first generation of the Yaris was introduced in 1999. In 2022, a total of 185,781 Yaris, 156,086 Yaris Cross, and 5,392 GR Yaris models were newly registered on European roads. As a result, the Yaris family accounted for over one-third of Toyota’s total sales in Europe.

The Yaris is the fifth Toyota model to achieve this remarkable production volume, following the Camry, Land Cruiser, Hilux, and RAV4. Toyota, the world’s largest automaker, is also known for its best-selling car, the Corolla, which has garnered over 50 million buyers since its introduction in 1966.

While the majority of European Yaris models are manufactured at the Valenciennes plant, which has produced approximately 4.5 million units, production has expanded to include the Kolin plant in the Czech Republic. Additionally, the Yaris is produced in Japan, Brazil, China, Taiwan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, and Thailand. In 2022, a total of 255,584 units were manufactured, making the Valenciennes plant the largest car manufacturing facility in France in terms of volume.

The 10 millionth Yaris, a GR Sport variant finished in Dynamic Gray, did not receive any special treatment aside from a ceremony for the entire workforce upon completion. Rather than being destined for a museum, this milestone Yaris was sold to a young customer from the Paris area.

This hybrid model is equipped with a 1.5-liter three-cylinder petrol engine producing 92 horsepower, supplemented by an 80-horsepower electric motor (resulting in a system output of 116 horsepower). In Germany, a well-equipped five-door Yaris of this kind starts at a minimum price of 29,790 euros. The cheapest Yaris model, featuring a one-liter three-cylinder engine with 72 horsepower, is available for 20,050 euros.
